An advocate by profession, Nagesh Dattatreya Kashalkar's (AKA Bhausaheb Kashalkar) first love was music. He learnt music for some time from Matangebua of Satara, developing his knowledge later on his own. His articles on music, many of them published in "Sangeet Kala Vihar" and various newpapers were lauded by musicians and musicologists alike, as was his book "Gandharva Shiksha".
He introduced his sons Arun, Vikas and Ulhas to Classical music and to Marathi Natya Sangeet from their early childhood.
