Youngest son of Late Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of Sham-Chaurasi Gharana, Shafqat began performing at the age of seven and his first performance was at the Lahore Music Festival. He has performed throughout the world at such venues as the World Music Institute at the Metropolitan in New York, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and various festivals in England, Germany, France and Switzerland. He has a strong following in both India and his home country, Pakistan, where he is regarded as something of a national treasure.
Shafqat is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1986 he received the Amir Khusro Award in Lahore as the best classical singer. In 1995 he received the Rajni Gandha Award from New Delhi University. In 1996 he received the Indra Gandhi Award presented at Sapru House, New Delhi. In 1997 he received the Saraswati Award at Harballabh Sangeet Music Festival in Jallandhar, Punjab. In 1998 he received the Ampitheatre Memento in New Delhi presented by Delhi University & Dyal Singh College.
