In Hindustani Classical Music circles, Pandit Ghosh does not need much introduction. A senior disciple of Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj-ji, Pandit Suman Ghosh is one of the present generation stalwarts of the Mewati Gharana of Hindustani Classical music. Winner of a number of prestigious awards and honors, Pandit Ghosh has performed all over India and many other countries of the world. Enriched with a mellifluous voice, well-cultivated & all-round musicianship and seasoned performing skills, Pandit Ghosh is also one of the few musicians in India who have admirably combined performance with academics. Pandit Ghosh began his journey in music at the tender age of 7 under the guidance of his mother Smt. Monika Ghosh. Later he trained under the maestros like Pandit Shrikant Bakre, Padmabhushan Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, and finally, the living legend of Indian music, Padma-vibhushan Pandit Jasraj-ji, who transformed him into a full-fledged performing musician. In the year 2008, the Sangeet Martand himself has bestowed the title of “Acharya Varishtha” to Pandit Ghosh. Times of India writes… Pandit Suman Ghosh “ has been able to cultivate a diction, a voice, a technique and a language cut to the size of the Mewati Gharana’s reigning Guru ( i.e. Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj-ji)…. The upper reaches of his voice has the same ringing quality of controlled falsettos which gives the style its remarkable reach and texture”. The Hindu writes… “Well-known for his spiritually inspiring concert performances, innovative workshops and lectures, Pt. Suman Ghosh, shuffles between performance and academics with equal ease”. Indo-American News writes…“His name is synonymous with Hindustani music in the greater Houston area. The poised and inspiring recital by the students reiterates their Guru Pandit Suman Ghosh’s prowess not only as a vocalist of note, but also as a considerably gifted teacher of the complex Hindustani Classical music system. Pandit-ji is more than a teacher who teaches this vidya, he is like a second father to these children. We are very blessed and fortunate to have him in this city”. India Herald writes….“Pandit Ghosh has stirred an awakening among classical music lovers in the Houston area”. As a path-finding Guru, Pandit Ghosh has innumerable disciples all over the United States and elsewhere. His depth of knowledge, narrative skills, command over the languages, and above all, the ability to blend the theories in the practical aspect of this music, have earned him a place in the hearts of even the younger generation of enthusiasts. |
