ShankarRao Ganesh Vyas was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He learnt music from Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. He was brother of Narayanrao Vyas. He was a sitar player, too. He composed music for Hindi, Marathi & Gujarati movies. Sangeetacharya Late Pandit Shankarrao Ganesh Vyas was one of the founder member of “The Vyas Academy of Indian Music”. He was born on 23rd January,1898 in Kolhapur(Maharashtra State). He started his music career in the year 1910 under the guidance of Ganmaharshi Late Pandit Vishnu Digamber Paluskar. He was awarded a degree “Sangeet Pravin” and excelled in vocal as well as instrumental music. Pandit Shankarrao Vyas was deputed to Ahmedabad (Gujarat State) in the year 1919 with the sole objective of popularizing Indian classical music among all the segments of the society irrespective of age, caste and creed. In 1936, he came to Mumbai at the request of his brother Gayanacharya Pandit Narayanrao Vyas. During the period from 1937 to 1954, he has given music direction to 32 hindi,5 marathi and 3 gujrathi films. Among them “Ram Rajya”, “Bharat Milap”, “Poornima”, “Narsi Mehta” and “Vikramaditya” well appreciated by film industry. Shankarrao Vyas was also instrumental in writing “Bandish” in various Ragas in Indian classical music. He has written various books such as Prathamik Sangeet (1 & 2), Madhyamik Sangeet (1 & 2), Sitar Vadan (1 & 2), Murli Naad & Vyas Kriti (1 to 4). He was also contributed for establishing “Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal” and started music magazine “Sangeet Kalavihar”. He was President, Secretary and Treasurer in Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal. To continue further the objective of popularizing Indian classical music among all masses of the society. He with the valuable assistance and popularity of his brother Pandit Narayanrao Vyas established in prime locality of Dadar(W), Mumbai a music school by name “Vyas Sangeet Vidyalaya” in June,1937. On 17th December,1956 he left for heavenly abode at Ahmedabad (Gujrat).
