Born in a wealthy family, avid devotees of music themselves, Pran Nath faced disapproval for his choice of becoming a musician. He left home and stayed with Abdul Wahid Khan of the Kirana Gharana. He studied for a long time, eventually returning to the world to preserve the gharana style. He later taught at many places such as the University of Delhi. His style of singing was very austere, focusing on slow-tempo and lengthy alaps.
