Biography
Arijit Mahalanabis is an Hindustani classical vocalist. the founder of the Seattle Indian Music Academy, the premier institute for training in Hindustani classical music in the Pacific Northwest.
Arijit studied Dhrupad, Dhamar and Khayal from Shantha Benegal, who studied with Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan and Pt. Murali Manohar Shukla. He also studied music theory and composition from musicologist Ramesh Gangolli, a student of Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, Pt. K.G. Ginde and Sharad Gadre.
Arijit has a flourishing concert career and a growing teaching practice, and delves regularly into a variety of research areas in musicology to supplement his practical understanding. His research has resulted in publications on topics as diverse as the mathematics of murchanas, and the Dhrupad traditions of Bishnupur Gharana. His students can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest, the United States and the world.
