Biography
Amarnath (1924–1996) is an Hindustani classical vocalist. Known for contributions to Hindustani classical music, performance, teaching, and repertoire building.
While remaining devoted to the aesthetic principles of his guru, Pandit Amarnath made a unique contribution to the gharana through his literary and compositional work. Writing under the pen name “Miturang,” he composed bandishes imbued with mystical poetry, adding a distinct philosophical and emotional dimension to khayal गायकी.
His career extended beyond performance into significant institutional and cultural roles. He served as a composer at All India Radio, where he was recruited during Ravi Shankar’s tenure, and later held important teaching and leadership positions as Director of Triveni Kala Sangam and Guru at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi. He also contributed to film and documentary music, most notably composing for the 1955 film Garam Coat , and for a documentary on Mirza Ghalib, which featured the only known ghazal recording by Amir Khan.
Pandit Amarnath’s legacy endures through his students, writings, and the continued recognition of his work. Publications such as Conversations with Pandit Amarnath and his memoirs on Amir Khan provide valuable insight into the Indore tradition. In his honor, the Pandit Amarnath Vaggeyakar Samman is awarded annually by the Pandit Amarnath Memorial Foundation, led by his daughter, Bindu Chawla, ensuring that his contributions to Indian classical music continue to be celebrated.
