Rambhau Kundgolkar 'Sawai Gandharva'

Rambhau Kundgolkar popularly known as Sawai Gandharva was the guru of Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Pt Firoz Dastur, Pt Basavraj Rajguru. He was a direct disciple of Abdul Karim Khan, the founder of Kirana Gharana. He worked for Govindrao Tembe's Shivraj Natak Mandali for some time, becoming famous for playing female roles. He was given the title of Sawai Gandharva by Dadasaheb Khaparde when after listening to him said "He tar Sawai Gandharva ahet" literally meaning he is one and a quarter of Gandharva (Gandharva here meaning Bal Gandharva during that time).
