Mohammad Yunus Khan

Ustad Md. Yunus Khan (15 August 1934 – 03 March 2001) was an Indian vocalist and touring artist known for his significant contributions to Hindustani classical music. Widely regarded as one of the maestros of classical singing in the Indian subcontinent, he was actively involved in the music industry, particularly in the realm of classical music. He toured several countries, including Bangladesh, where he participated in music concerts worldwide. 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 Born in Malda, West Bengal, British India, he hailed from a family of musicians and was profoundly influenced by khyal, a Sufi devotional music genre associated with Hindustani classical music. He stood as one of the senior-most disciples of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, the son of the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Kasur Patiyala Gharana. He married Sahera Khan, with whom he had five children, including three daughters and two sons. He imparted classical music training to one of his sons, Sahadat Rana Khan, contributing to the Kasur Patiala Gharana's continued prominence in traditional music. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 Ustad Md. Yunus Khan was the founder of Sabrang Sangeet Vidyalaya and had close associations with the cultural societies of Malda. He composed music for various occasions and excelled in devotional music. Additionally, he composed and directed music for numerous popular gramophone records sung by various artists. His notable students include Ustad Sahadat Rana Khan, Dr. Rupa Sinha, Smt. Paromita Ghosh Dastidar, Shri Goutam Das, Smt. Sanghamitra Chakraborty, and others. The "Sangeet Acharya Md. Yunus Khan Music Festival," celebrating his birth centenary, is observed annually on 15 August in Malda, West Bengal, organized by his grandson Sadakat Aman Khan. 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 Ustad Md. Yunus Khan passed away from cardiac arrest in Malda, West Bengal, on 3 July 2001, and he is interred in the main Muslim cemetery in Malda.
