Swarmandal

Type: String
Swarmandal

Description

Swarmandal is a small harp-like instrument used to add a shimmering tonal color, especially alongside the voice. In Hindustani music, raag is not only notes but atmosphere, and a brief sweep on swarmandal can instantly paint that atmosphere by highlighting important swaras. It became popular in accompaniment contexts because it adds beauty without overpowering the main artist.

It is built as a wooden frame strung with many metal strings, each tuned to selected notes that suit the raag being performed. The player plucks or brushes strings in gentle arpeggios, often as an introduction or as a soft underline during singing. It is mainly accompaniment or textural support rather than a primary solo instrument, and what makes it unique is its sparkling, raag-specific wash, which differs from the steady drone of tanpura and the linear melody of most instruments.
