Jaltarang

Description

Jaltarang is an old and now rarely heard instrument where melody is produced by tuned bowls. In Indian classical and light traditions, raag and taal still guide what is played, but jaltarang is especially valued for delicate, bell-like tone that suits gentle phrases and lyrical pieces. It faded in popularity largely because it is time-consuming to set up and difficult to transport compared to modern instruments.

It consists of a set of bowls, traditionally porcelain or metal, arranged in a semicircle. Water is added to each bowl to fine-tune pitch, and the performer strikes the rims with two sticks to produce notes. Control depends on consistent touch, rebound, and careful damping. It is usually featured as a solo or color instrument, and what makes it unique is that pitch is literally shaped by water level, creating a crystalline sound that strings and reeds cannot imitate.
