Shehnai

Type: Wind
Shehnai

Description

The shehnai is a North Indian double-reed wind instrument long associated with ceremonies and auspicious occasions, and later recognized as capable of serious classical depth. In Hindustani music, raag and taal guide the structure, and the shehnai can sing long phrases, build alap, and move into rhythmic sections with an unmistakable reedy brightness. It became popular because it carries outdoors, fills large spaces, and evokes celebration while still being intensely expressive.

It is built as a wooden tube with finger holes and a flared bell, often metal, and it uses a double reed to create sound. The performer controls tone with breath and embouchure, using fingering and half-holing for microtones and ornaments. It is mostly a solo instrument though it appears in ensembles for ceremonial contexts, and what makes it unique is its piercing yet emotional voice, distinctly different from the softness of flute and the smoother reediness of clarinet-like instruments.
