Surbahar

Description
Surbahar is a bass relative of the sitar developed for a deeper, more spacious exploration of raag. Hindustani music values slow unfolding, especially in alap, and the surbahar’s lower register offers a majestic canvas for that style. It is admired for its ability to sound grave and expansive, appealing to listeners who love depth and patience in raag development.
It is larger than a sitar, with a longer scale length and a big resonator, and it often includes sympathetic strings that enrich the sound. It is played with mizrab, but phrasing tends to emphasize long pulls, sustained tone, and weighty articulation. It is primarily a solo instrument, and what makes it unique compared to sitar is its darker, heavier voice and the authority it brings to slow, profound alap in the bass range.
