Rudra Veena or Been

Description
Rudra veena, also known as been, is one of the most revered instruments of the dhrupad tradition. Hindustani music is organized by raag and taal, and this instrument embodies the slow, dignified unfolding of raag with emphasis on pure swar and powerful gamak. It is culturally associated with discipline, depth, and an older classical aesthetic, often linked to courtly and temple environments where dhrupad flourished.
It is built with a long tubular body and large gourd resonators, fitted with fixed frets and metal strings that produce strong resonance. The performer plucks and uses the left hand to press and pull around the frets to create weighty gamak and controlled meend. It is a solo instrument, and what makes it unique is its grave authority and deep resonance, offering a sonic majesty that feels fundamentally different from the lighter shimmer of sitar or the sharper articulation of sarod.
