Origin

Tilang, as a word, appears to have connection with Telangana, i.e. the contemporary Indian State of Andhra Pradesh which has Telugu as its regional language. It is also true that there exists a tradition of names of Ragas that are derived from names of regions, indicating thereby, a regional origin of specific Raga-s. However, in case of Tilang, apart from conjecture based on similarity of names there is no musicological evidence for assuming linkage between the present-day Tilang rendered in Hindustani music and the Telangana region. In fact, this region follows other system of art music in India, namely the Carnatic.

The Raga does not have Dhrupad, Dhamar or Khayal and hence it may not be a very old member of the Hindustani Raga corpus.
