Origin
Tukhari was probably based on a folk tune from within the state of Punjab. The Raga can only be found within the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, as it is a "Gurmat Raag".
Myth / Story
Tukhari was based on folk tunes which were later adapted by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji into a raga. It appears to be a raga for the morning hours to be sung in winter. Its name Tukhari is derived from the Sanskrit word tushar, which means winter frost.
There are two known versions of Raag Tukhari; Contemporary Tukhari, which is the most used version, and Puratan Tukhari, which is based more on the ancient version of Tukhari, raag Mukhari.
