Origin

It is instructive to note that words Aasaavari and Asaavari are not of Sanskrit origin. There is a word Aasaa  in Vedic Sanskrit which means nearness or proximity. When one checks with the Hindi sources one gathers that the word Asavari does not exist independently but only as a variation of Aasavari which means a kind of cotton cloth or a variety of pigeon! In Marathi sources, Asavari is name of one herb and Aasavari that of the Raga under discussion. The obvious surmise is that the word, Raga-name as well as the Raga is obviously of later and recent origin!

Whatever the early controversies about the name of the Raga, today the position is that Asavari is understood to include the note komal rishabh and Raga Jaunpuri the note shuddha rishabh. Both Ragas are derived from Asavari Ang, but Jaunpuri is placed in Asavari Thaat due to Shuddha Rishabh and Komal Asavari in Bhairavi Thaat due to Komal Rishabh.
