Krishna Gundopant Ginde was a singer (Hindustani Art Music), teacher, composer, and scholar. K G Ginde, called "Chhotu" (small) by family members and close friends because he was the 8th among 9 children, was born on December 26, 1925 in Bailhongal, near Belgaum. He showed interest in music from an early age and devoted his entire life to its pursuit. He recieved training in Hindustani vocal music for many decaded under guidance of Acharya Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar, who himself being a great singer of Agra Gharana, a master composer and scholar, gave a unique vision to Ginde Ji. He moved to Mumbai in 1951 to take up a teaching post with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. In 1962 he became principal of Vallabh Sangeet Vidyalaya. His knowledge of RagaSangeet was comprehensive. He would demonstrate various facets of a Raag or a Raagaang in seminars or lecture demonstrations. When he was celebrated in his sixtieth birthday, some of the biggest names in Hindustani music including Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharva, P L Deshpande graced the function. Pandit Ginde died on July 13, 1994 in Calcutta after suffering a massive heart attack. |
