Vasant Thakar was a singer, teacher and composer from Paluskar branch of Gwalior gharana. His father & Guru Pandit Vamanrao Thakar was himself a singer and a disciple of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Vamanrao Thakar was teaching music at his own ‘Saurashtra Sangeet Vidyalay’ at Bhavnagar, where Vasant Thakar was born. By 1929, Vamanrao moved to Allahabad and opened ‘Vishnu Digambar Academy of Music’ and also taught at Prayag Sangeet Samiti. So from the childhood, Vasant Thakar got training under his father. Besides this, Vasant Thakar also received training under Pandit Bholanath Bhatt of Banaras.

After attaining ‘Sangeet Prabhakar’ degree and also completing M.A in Economics in 1949, Vasant Thakar started teaching music at Prayag Sangeet Samiti. In 1954, he joined ‘Hindi High School’ as a music teacher. In 1955, he joined ‘Lawrence School’ at Sanavar as music teacher.

After completing ‘Sangeet Alankar’ in 1960, he joined Gandharva Mahavidyalay, New Delhi where is worked as a music teacher for 20 good years. He visited USA with the famous ‘Gandharva Choir troupe’. From 1982, he was training pupils freelance.

Rather than a performing singer, Vasant Thakar was more known as a good creative teacher. He was always experimental in teaching techniques and was successful in making students learn in a very interesting way. While working at Gandharva Mahavidyalay, he experimented a lot even in composing music for kids.

Vasant Thakar was a talented ‘Waggeyakar’, i.e. a composer in Hindustani art music. He composed numerous beautiful Bandishes in several common & uncommon Raags, which were published in a book ‘Kalaa Ranjani’ (1993, New Delhi). Good poetry blended with the inherent mood of the Raag and graceful gait of Taal were some aesthetic features of his Bandishes. Many performers such as Veena Sahasrabuddhe, Shubha Mudgal has presented his Bandishes and made them popular.
