Chintamani Mishra (early 18th cent AD) was a matchless Dhrupad Singer in the royal court of Baji Rao Peshwa II in the Deccan. He went to Brahmawarta or Bithur with Baji Rao. After Baji Rao’s death, he was employed by Jiyaji Maharaj Shinde (Sindia) of Gwalior. He used to compose a Dhrupad every day and sing if for the deity. His Dhruads are marked with his Mudra, i.e. pen-name ‘Chintaman’ and ‘Cheta’. He also composed few Sadra Bandish-s and most famous is ‘Sakhi Mukhachandra’ in Raga Khambawati. Most of his disciples were in Gwalior & Ramkrishna Paranjape alias Dewaji Buwa of Dhar (a great Dhruapd, Khayal & Tappa singer in mid 18th cent. & Guru of Balkrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar) was his most prominent disciple. |
