A classical Hindustani vocalist most known for her performances of Khyal, Thumri and Bhajans. She was the sister-in-law of Pandit Ravi Shankar and the mother-in-law of violinist L. Subramaniam. She originally was a dancer and became a vocalist later on. She was disciple of Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiyala Gharana. She also had guidance under Prof. B R Deodhar in Mumbai.
